Staying Connected to Support Around You
“Be kind to yourself as you are doing the best you can during this time, and stay connected to the support around you (whoever they may be for you!).”
– Stephanie Hannant, Assistant Dean & Case Manager
During this time, staying connected to support and having a sense of gratitude even for the support around you (even if remote), is so important and can help enhance your well-being. I hope you have found moments to reflect on those individuals who have had an impact on your life whether through mentoring, guidance, providing honest and constructive feedback that has helped you grow and develop, connecting you with opportunities or just to listen or be there for you during various experiences along your student pathway, and through this time.
As part of the close-knit Pitzer family, you are not alone. I encourage you to reach out to others to check in. This can include a loved one, a friend, peers, staff, faculty, former supervisors, including former internship supervisors. You never know the depth that a simple act of care and empathy for others, can take. These small check ins can help provide positive reinforcement, support, and sometimes, even helping to uplift and bring you into connections to new opportunities. Sometimes, even just a reminder that you can get through things together, or come up with strategies to accomplish small goals (and celebrate them together!) can go a long way.
At Pitzer, each of you, matter. A team of about 30 staff volunteers have joined together to make sure every single one of you receives personal outreach from someone in our community. If you find yourself with a sense of wanting to connect with someone and not knowing who to reach out to, feel free to email me at [email protected] or reach out to any Student Affairs staff member.
Proud Together,
Sandy Vasquez
Assistant Vice-President and Dean of Students

Tuesday, May 5th | 3:00 p.m. PDT
The third iteration of “Stay at Home with Pitzer College Art Galleries,” takes the form of a conversation between artists Jenny Yurshansky and Kang Seung Lee who will discuss their respective exhibitions (both 2015) and their experience working at Pitzer and engaging Campus communities. Concerned with systems of inclusion and exclusion, Jenny Yurshansky: Blacklisted, a Planted Allegory explored the official terminology used by the Californian invasive plant registry—which described plants as alien, invasive, and non-native—as a means to discuss border control issues and immigration. Alternatively, Kang Seung Lee: Artspeak (Untitled?), took the mainstream compendium of art from the early 90’s as its point of reference to rewrite conventional art history from a queer perspective. A brief Q & A will follow.

The library is helping students access course and other needed materials through various Open Access avenues. If you are doing research from outside of The Claremont Colleges or another institution, you may not have access to resources which require a subscription for access. Fortunately, the increase in open access publishing means that a great deal of scholarly information is available without journal subscriptions. Even for those of us fortunate enough to have access to subscription-based materials through our library, locating open access resources is helpful for finding articles or books that are freely available. Consider using some of the tools on our Open Content page to help you in your search.
