ORIENTATION ADVENTURE

ALL FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS SPEND FOUR DAYS IN SMALL GROUP EXCURSIONS WITH 10 TO 15 FELLOW CLASSMATES BEFORE CLASSES BEGIN AS PART OF NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION.

These adventures take place in, above and around the Los Angeles Basin and the greater Southern California area.

MEET CECIL THE SAGEHEN

While origins of our beloved mascot date back to 1913, the name Cecil didn’t appear until 1946. Two conflicting stories exist as to how Cecil the Sagehen came to be our mascot.

OFF CAMPUS

You know the saying: location, location, location. Our surrounding area plays a crucial role in shaping the student experience here. We’re lucky to be located in Claremont, California: a bustling yet small city with a rich history, and a hub of activity just outside of Los Angeles.

Whether you’re a foodie, a mountain biker, an artist, or a skier, there is something for you in Claremont. Looking for fun activities nearby? We have some suggestions:

  • Head into the historic village to eat at some of our favorite spots: 21 Choices frozen yogurt, 42nd Street Bagel, Augie’s Coffee House, and Gus’s BBQ!
  • Take a hike in the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park.
  • Shop around at the Packing House, the old citrus packing warehouse converted into shops and restaurants.
  • Explore the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden or head to the Bernard Field Station for class field work.
  • Hop on the ski lift up Mount Baldy to hit the slopes, or to just enjoy the view!
  • Check out the local Farmer’s Market downtown every Sunday morning.​​​

Pitzer maintains a thriving community of students, alumni, and the family of students. Parents often volunteer in the Office of Career Services, building a strong support network.

Class Out in the Community

“A class I took my first year, (Re)Learning Love of the Land, had us volunteer at the California Botanic Garden which introduced me to the immense variety of fun events they have. In addition to volunteer weekends, they have a haunted Halloween garden event, the Acorn Festival run by Tongva elders, and seasonal events for new plantings. It’s the perfect place to go to get away from my other obligations on a beautiful California day (of which we have plenty around here)!” – Vivian Anable Eme ’22

Local Digs 

“The Claremont Farmers Market happens every Sunday morning, and is one of my favorite parts of the Claremont Village. There are so many different stalls with everything from delicious locally farmed fruits and vegetables, fresh almond butter, succulents and plants, and different artisan products like candles and earrings. I try to go weekly and get little treats like fresh baked sourdough or the really incredible hummus and pita from Mom’s Specialty Foods. The farmers market is also a great way to be involved in the Claremont community and meet our neighbors!” – Olivia Landgraff ’22
