Class Out in the Community

“A class I took my first year, (Re)Learning Love of the Land, had us volunteer at the California Botanic Garden which introduced me to the immense variety of fun events they have. In addition to volunteer weekends, they have a haunted Halloween garden event, the Acorn Festival run by Tongva elders, and seasonal events for new plantings. It’s the perfect place to go to get away from my other obligations on a beautiful California day (of which we have plenty around here)!” – Vivian Anable Eme ’22

World-Famous Museums

“The Broad is my favorite Los Angeles art museum! Admission is free, and while there can sometimes be a line, it’s always worth it. Their collection isn’t overwhelming so you’re never there too long and the architecture is fascinating. It’s a short walk from the Union Station stop on the Metrolink (which is accessible from campus), and it’s close to a ton of great food options, including Grand Central Market, which is an amazing line of food stalls in downtown LA” – Eamon Morris ’22

Beach Bum Lifestyle

“Doheny State Beach offers a great opportunity for anyone to surf! Located only a little over an hour away from campus, Doheny serves up waves that beginners and intermediate surfers will enjoy. I would try and check out a wetsuit and surfboard from Pitzer Outdoor Adventures, or you can rent both a board and wetsuit for $20 an hour near Doheny. Super easy and a fun surfing spot.” – Jackson Patrick ’21

Nearby National Parks

“The first time I went to Joshua Tree it was for a marathon hike for women and non-binary people. Walking 26.2 miles with old and new friends in the middle of beautiful Joshua Tree was an incredibly beautiful and joyous experience. There were nearly ~40 people who participated and it was organized by two Pitzer students and Pitzer Outdoor Adventures members. At the end of the marathon hike, we all watched the sunset and made dinner together.” – Izzy DeTroy ’21

Local Digs

“The Claremont Farmers Market happens every Sunday morning, and is one of my favorite parts of the Claremont Village. There are so many different stalls with everything from delicious locally farmed fruits and vegetables, fresh almond butter, succulents and plants, and different artisan products like candles and earrings. I try to go weekly and get little treats like fresh baked sourdough or the really incredible hummus and pita from Mom’s Specialty Foods. The farmers market is also a great way to be involved in the Claremont community and meet our neighbors!” – Olivia Landgraff ’22
