Alumna Diane Shammas ’75 Honored with the Alex Odeh Memorial Award

Pitzer College alumna Diane Shammas ’75 received the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee’s Alex Odeh Memorial Award on October 9, 2021. The ADC honored Shammas as an activist, scholar, and philanthropist, citing her work in Gaza, her research on the experiences of Arab and Muslim American college students, and her generosity as a donor to a variety of causes.

Professor Suyapa Portillo Villeda ’96 Wins National Women’s Studies Association Book Prize

Professor Suyapa Portillo VilledaProfessor Suyapa Portillo Villeda's book "Roots of Resistance: A Story of Gender, Race, and Labor on the North Coast of Honduras," has won the National Women's Studies Association’s Sarah A. Whaley Book Prize for 2021. The prize is awarded “for groundbreaking scholarship in women's studies that makes significant feminist contributions to the topic of women and labor.”

Professor José Zapata Calderón Recognized as a Community Leader and Scholar

José Z. CalderónLos Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis has named Pitzer College Professor José Zapata Calderón a Hispanic Heritage Month honoree. Solis, who represents the First District on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, posted a series of profiles on Facebook honoring First District leaders during Hispanic Heritage Month. Calderon is a Pitzer professor emeritus of sociology and Chicano/a-Latino/a Studies.
