Professor José Zapata Calderón Recognized as a Community Leader and Scholar
Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis has named Pitzer College Professor José Zapata Calderón a Hispanic Heritage Month honoree. Solis, who represents the First District on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, posted a series of profiles on Facebook honoring First District leaders during Hispanic Heritage Month. Calderon is a Pitzer professor emeritus of sociology and Chicano/a-Latino/a Studies.
Professor José Z. Calderón Co-authors Paper on Intersectional Solidarity
Pitzer Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Chicano/a-Latino/a Studies José Z. Calderón recently co-authored an article that explores how movements predominately focused on one issue can coalesce across causes. The article, “Intersectional Organizing and Educational Justice Movements: Strategies for Cross-Movement Solidarities,” appeared in a special spring 2021 issue of The Assembly: A Journal for Public Scholarship on Education, published by the University of Colorado at Boulder’s School of Education.
National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies honors professor emeritus José Z. Calderón
José Z. Calderón, Pitzer College professor emeritus of sociology and Chicano/a and Latino/a studies, has been named the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies (NACCS) 2019 Scholar, the organization’s lifetime achievement award.
