Claremont, Calif. (February 4, 2011) — Pitzer College Professor Jose Calderon will join Global Perspective Institute, Inc.’s (GPI) roundtable discussion on Feb 7, 2011 in Washington DC to advise the US Department of Education and its Office of Postsecondary Education on how to increase higher education’s leadership in promoting civic learning and democratic engagement.
Calderon was invited because of his innovative thinking and program activity on civic and democratic engagement. The February 7 roundtable will bring together faculty leaders across differing disciplines whose scholarship and teaching focuses on civic and democratic learning whether in local or global contexts as well as higher education and civic learning researchers.
Global Perspective Institute Inc. was awarded a contract by the Department of Education to develop a “National Action Plan” to increase postsecondary education’s leadership in promoting “civic learning and democratic engagement.” In collaboration with The Association of American Colleges and Universities, they have organized a national dialogue that can inform future discussion and actions by the Office of Postsecondary Education.
