“Char Miller is a prolific, award-winning author and beloved professor [who has] introduced new generations of students and conservationists to the fundamental principles upon which the conservation movement in America was founded,” said Nels Johnson, chair of the Pinchot Institute for Conservation’s Board of Directors.

The head of The Claremont Colleges’ intercollegiate environmental analysis program and the W.M. Keck Professor of Environmental Analysis at Pomona College, Miller is an expert on the history of conservation and environmental policy. He also serves as a consultant for the US Forest Service.

Miller is the author of eight books, including On the Edge: Water, Immigration, and Politics in the Southwest and Death Valley National Park: A History, both published earlier this year. He has written extensively about Gifford Pinchot, who served as the first chief of the US Forest Service in 1905. Miller played a central role in the 2012 PBS documentary film, Seeking the Greatest Good: The Conservation Legacy of Gifford Pinchot, and authored a book by the same name.

The Pinchot Institute for Conservation is dedicated to strengthening forest conservation thought, policy and action by developing innovative, practical and broadly-supported solutions to conservation challenges and opportunities.
Char Miller majored in history and political studies at Pitzer College and earned his MA and PhD in history from Johns Hopkins University.
