Pitzer College Professor Wins Mathematical Association of America Grant

Claremont, Calif. (April 5, 2010) — Pitzer College Professor of Mathematics David Bachman received a Mathematical Association of America Tensor–SUMMA grant for his Gateway to Exploring the Mathematical Sciences Program.

The Gateway to Exploring the Mathematical Sciences Program brings 50-70 middle school students from surrounding communities to the Pitzer College campus once a month to provide them with important exposure to interesting topics in mathematics.

The Strengthening Underrepresented Minority Mathematics Achievement (SUMMA) Program of the Mathematical Association of America was established in 1990 to increase the representation of minorities in the fields of mathematics, science and engineering and improve the mathematics education of minorities.
