Claremont, Calif. (February 24, 2010) – Pitzer College congratulates Sol Estin ’10, who was named a Best Delegate at the 2010 Harvard National Model United Nations for his representation of Costa Rica in the United Nations Economic Commission on Latin America and the Caribbean Committee.
Estin, a political studies major, has participated in Pitzer’s Model UN program for the past four years. In 2009, he received an Outstanding Delegation award for representing Zimbabwe on the World Health Organization Committee.
He co-led Pitzer’s student team this year, which participated in the General Assembly Committee, the Security Council and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean Committee.
Professor Tom Ilgen, the team’s faculty advisor, said, “Among the skills that a delegate must demonstrate are excellent public speaking, superior leadership, the ability to work with or negotiate with other delegates and the ability to put together a resolution that has the support of the majority of the committee and creatively addresses the issue at hand. In my observations of Sol, he performed with distinction on all these criteria.”
In its 56th year, the Harvard Model United Nations Conference attracts more than 3,000 students from colleges and universities across the United States and 36 counties internationally. The program offers students the opportunity to experience the challenges of international negotiation and diplomacy through simulating the activities of the United Nations.
