Sofia Barsher ’18 setting up the game-winning goal against Redlands on Saturday
Claremont, Calif. (Sept. 22, 2014) This week in Sagehens Athletics saw the Men’s Water Polo team pick up a win over No. 12 Loyola Marymount, while the Men’s Soccer and Women’s Soccer teams both went 2-0 to remain undefeated in conference play.
Women’s Soccer opened SCIAC play with a pair of home wins, defeating La Verne 2-0 on Wednesday and Redlands 3-1 on Saturday. Sara Ach ’15 scored a second-half goal in the win over La Verne, while Sofia Barsher ’18 earning the assist on the game-winning goal against Redlands. The Sagehens will be on the road this week for games at Occidental on Wednesday and Cal Lutheran on Saturday.
Men’s Soccer also won its two games this week, defeating La Verne on the road 2-1 in overtime and then taking a 2-0 road win at Cal Lutheran on Saturday. Team captain Andrew Lind ’14 continues to provide leadership to the team’s defense, helping the Sagehens earn the shutout at Cal Lutheran, while new roster addition James Bright-Dumm ’16 has given the team another weapon in its attack. The Sagehens host Whittier on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and then travel to Redlands on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
Men’s Water Polo earned a big upset at the Kap7 NorCal Classic on Sunday, defeating No. 12 Loyola Marymount 9-8 in sudden death overtime. Stephen Vint ’15 scored the game-winning goal on a penalty shot, his fifth goal of the match, while Timothy (Timmy) Hardman ’17 also had a goal in the overtime session to put the Sagehens ahead 8-7. Austin Strong ’15 added a goal in a loss to No. 14 Santa Clara. Men’s Water Polo will be off this week before returning to action when it hosts the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament on Oct. 3-4.
Football gave a strong effort in its home opener against Rhodes, which came in undefeated after winning its conference last year. The Sagehens were within 28-21 in the fourth quarter, but Rhodes eventually pulled away for a 42-21 win. Nick Urban ’17 had a big day for the defense, tallying 11 tackles from his linebacker position. The football team will be off until Oct. 4, when it hosts Redlands in its SCIAC opener.
Volleyball split a pair of SCIAC matches this week, defeating Whittier 3-0 and falling on the road to Cal Lutheran 3-1. In the Whittier match, the Sagehens were down 24-21 in the first set, before Ellen Yamasaki ’15 started a 5-0 run to come from behind and take the win, with Natalie Lindeman ’17 serving it out. The Sagehens host Occidental on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. contest and travel up to Harvey Mudd to take on CMS on Saturday.
Men’s Tennis and Women’s Tennis will serve as hosts of the USTA/ITA Fall West Regional Tournament this week from Friday-Sunday, with action taking place all day beginning at 9 a.m. Men’s Tennis will feature Jacob Yasgoor ’17 and Graham Maassen ’17, who had big seasons as first-year students, while Women’s Tennis has Mallory Roth ’17 amongst its returning competitors.
