Claremont, Calif. (February 4, 2014) — Pitzer College Assistant Professor Andrea Scott has been awarded a joint German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and German-American Fulbright Commission fellowship, a selective program which accepts no more than 15 participants each year. Scott will attend the Summer Academy in Leipzig, Germany from June 14-28, 2014. Scott teaches academic writing and serves as the director of Pitzer’s Writing Center.

The Summer Academy offers professional development in areas related to teaching German and current developments in German and European higher education, including recent reforms such as the Bologna Process—a joint effort by European countries to create comparable standards. The seminar is being held at Leipzig University’s Herder Institute.
“The summit is an opportunity to think about teaching and educational policy in a more global context—a core Pitzer value,” Scott said. “I’ll learn new models for conceptualizing language learning that will be useful to the Writing Center’s work with multilingual writers. I’ll also meet faculty and educational leaders who are negotiating national and European-wide higher education reforms that emphasize a student-centered approach.”
While in Germany this summer, Scott will also present a paper, “Transatlantic Partnerships: What German and American Writing Studies Scholars Can Learn from One Another,” at the 2014 European Writing Center Association Conference in Frankfurt an der Oder. This spring, she will deliver a paper on teaching writing in Germany at a workshop at the Convention on the Conference of College Composition and Communication.
Scott’s Fulbright experience will allow her to better advise Pitzer students who are seeking fellowships in the German-speaking world and help them make connections to host universities abroad.
Scott became fluent in German during her senior year in high school when she won a national scholarship to study abroad in Germany. She went on to major in Germanic studies and English literature at Mills College. While pursuing her masters and doctorate in comparative literature at the University of Chicago, she studied at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. Before coming to Pitzer in fall 2013, Scott served as the associate director of Princeton University’s Writing Program.
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is a publicly-funded independent organization of higher education institutions in Germany. Each year DAAD, its regional branch offices, information centers and professors provide information and financial support to more than 67,000 highly-qualified students and faculty for international research and study.
