Sagehen Roundup for the Week of February 9

Claremont, Calif. (February 16, 2015) –This week in Sagehens Athletics saw both the Men’s Basketball and Women’s Basketball teams sweep two SCIAC games, while the Baseball team started out 3-0 in SCIAC with a three-game sweep of CMS.

Women’s Basketball completed a season sweep of both Occidental and Caltech this week behind some impressive individual performances. Junior forward Amelia Hummel ’16 shattered her career high in scoring with 31 points, to go along with 17 rebounds (tying a career high), five blocks and four assists in the Caltech win. Basha Brulee-Wills ’17 had double-doubles in both games, including 26 points and 10 rebounds in a 69-63 win over Occidental and 17 points and 10 rebounds against Caltech. Kacie Hitomi ’17 added a career-high 10 assists in the Caltech win as well.

Men’s Basketball moved into a tie for fourth place in the SCIAC with wins over Occidental and Caltech. Adrian Brandon ’15 helped key the win over Occidental with 15 points on 6-7 shooting as the Sagehens improved to 7-6 in the SCIAC, recovering from an 0-5 start to tie Whittier for fourth (the top four teams get SCIAC postseason bids) with just three games left to play, including their finale against Whittier next week. This week, Men’s Basketball will face CMS in a road game at Voelkel Gymnasium and then travel to Redlands on Saturday.

Baseball earned a three-game sweep of CMS, scoring in double figures in all three games. Friday’s game at Alumni Field saw the Sagehens win in eight innings 13-3, while Saturday’s doubleheader resulted in 10-6 and 15-13 victories. Mark Okuma ’15 had a big weekend with two homers and five RBI, while Sam Fox ’15 was 7-for-14 with four RBI, E.J. Lopez ’15 added four RBI, and Kevin Jordan ’17 added his first career home run to go with four RBI. Cameron Yen ’16 added a pitching win in the second game of the series, allowing just one earned run. The Sagehens will host Bates on Wednesday in a non-conference game and then play a three-game series with Redlands, including a home doubleheader on Saturday.

Track and Field had its annual dual meet with Occidental (dubbed “The Battle for the Banner”) and the Sagehens maintained their hold of the banner with a 152-123 win. Kaile Sauro ’17 contributed a win for the women in the hurdles, while Bennett Kopperud ’16 won the hurdles on the men’s side.   Ellen Yamasaki ’15 added a win in the discus and finished second in the shot put and hammer, while Quinn Cassidy ’18 took the men’s pole vault. The Sagehens will host their annual Collegiate All-Comers meet this Saturday at Strehle Track.

Softball split its SCIAC-opening doubleheader with Redlands, taking the first game 19-6 in five innings, and also dropped a non-league twinbill with George Fox. Ashley Morello ’15 scored three runs in the win over Redlands, while Eden Griffen ’17 threw three innings of shutout relief to get the win. Pomona-Pitzer hosts two doubleheaders this weekend, facing Willamette on Friday at 1 p.m. and hosting SCIAC rival Cal Lutheran on Saturday at 12 noon.

Swimming and Diving will be in action at the SCIAC Championships at Whittier this weekend, which will run from ThursdaySunday. Both the women and the men finished second behind CMS in the regular season and will have several swimmers challenging for individual titles. Mari Pettibone ’15 (breaststroke), Cayla Nishizaki ’17 (sprint freestyle) and Kara Miller-Radest ’18 (butterfly) will challenge in their events for the women, while Kyle Dalrymple ’17 (breaststroke), Will Thorson ’16 (butterfly), Eirik Hansen ‘15 (sprint freestyle), Andrew Savage ‘15 (sprint freestyle) and Andy Wright ’16 (distance freestyle) will be key contributors for the men. Dawn Barlow ’16 and Jeremy Goldberg ’17 will compete in the diving events for the Sagehens.

Men’s Golf opened the 2015 season on Sunday with a dual against La Verne, and Spencer Katchman ’18 had a strong college debut for the Sagehens, ranking second on the team with a 76, one shot behind teammate Kevin Knox. Brian Fong ’17 added an 81 to rank third on the team. Men’s and Women’s Golf will both be in action this weekend at the first SCIAC Regular Season championship, held at Robinson Ranch.

The final two spring sports to get started will have their first events this week. Women’s Lacrosse opens its campaign on Wednesday at home against Whittier (7 p.m.) after making the NCAA Division III Championships for the first time in program history last year. Sarah Markowitz ’16 is the top returning goal scorer for the Sagehens, while Aubrey Douglass ’16 leads returnees in assists. Zoe Brown ’15 will be one of the leaders of the team’s defense. Women’s Tennis, which also qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year, hosts Cal Lutheran on Friday. Marie Fleming ’16, Mallory Roth ’17 and Grace Hruska ’18 will be among the players looking to be in the opening day singles lineup.
