Jumpstart is a national non-profit working toward the day every child enters school prepared to succeed. Through Jumpstart, college students work in teams in local preschools serving low-income neighborhoods. Through our focus on school success, family involvement and developing future teachers, Jumpstart works to create a nurturing environment where children can thrive, and advocates for equality in access to high-quality education. What We Do
Claremont College students work in teams of 5-6 spending about 8-10 hours in their preschool classroom. These students reach out to families and the greater community, working to create a positive and enriching learning environment for these local children. Find out more about Jumpstart Claremont.
Jumpstart Claremont currently partners with Easter Seals Child Development Center in Upland and Easter Seals Child Development Center in Montclair.
In low-income neighborhoods, 50% of children start school up to two years behind their peers. Since these early inequalities increase with time, a child’s experience in preschool is directly linked to their greater academic longevity. By the fourth grade, more than half of white and Asian American children cannot read at grade level; for Latino, Black and American Indian children this percentage increases to 80%. Through our direct service, Jumpstart is committed to creating broad, sustainable change in early childhood education. Jumpstart children build language and literacy skills at a greater rate than children who don’t take part in Jumpstart. Find out more.
