COVID-19 Update - 04.08.22

April 8, 2022

Dear Pitzer Community,

As we come to the close of our week, we are pleased to report a current decline in positive COVID-19 cases at Pitzer. As of this morning, we have four new positive cases, down from seven yesterday.

We currently have a total of 41 cases in isolation, with 32 of those on campus. These are nearly all student cases, with transmission occurring among friend groups and close contacts, including students living off campus. About half of the cases are asymptomatic, and others have varying levels of symptoms, with no hospitalizations to date.

We continue to work closely with our healthcare providers, and they are optimistic that we will continue to see positive cases trending downward.  We are staying the course with existing mitigation guidance, implemented in alignment with our doctors’ and L.A. County’s requirements.

Please monitor the Pathway Forward website for regular updates and to connect to resources and support.

Thank you for being mindful of each other during this time.

The Leadership Team

NOTE: There is typically a 1-2 day delay in reporting positive cases on the Pitzer COVID-19 dashboard, and the dashboard only shows Student Health Services-diagnosed cases.

Important COVID-19 Updates and New Guidelines - 04.06.22

April 6, 2022

Dear Pitzer Community,

We are writing to provide an update on the status of COVID-19 cases on campus. We are currently experiencing a surge in positive COVID-19 cases here at Pitzer and at The Claremont Colleges.

As of this morning, we are reporting at least 24 new positive cases, up from 7 new positive cases yesterday. We currently have a total of 61 positive cases, with 44 in isolation on campus and 17 in isolation off campus. These are nearly all student cases with transmission occurring among friend groups and close contacts, including students living off-campus. About half of the cases are asymptomatic, and others are varying levels of symptoms, with no hospitalizations to date. We anticipate a large number of students previously in isolation from last week’s positive caseload to be released from isolation by the end of this week.

NOTE: There is typically a 1-2 day delay on reporting positive cases on the Pitzer COVID-19 dashboard, and the dashboard only shows Student Health Services diagnosed cases. As our Student Affairs team prioritizes immediate care for impacted students, please note there will also be a delay in notices to faculty.

We continue to work closely with our healthcare providers, and they are optimistic that we will start to see a decline in cases and student isolations as early as next week.

While this new information may be alarming to the Pitzer community, in consultation with our doctors this wave is to be expected given our case numbers last week, and we are hopeful that with the mitigation efforts Pitzer implemented last week and enhanced 5C mitigation efforts, we will soon see a decline in cases.

We will post further updates on the Pathway Forward webpage.  For faculty support, please email [email protected].

Below are reminders and the resources available to the community:

  • If you are a close contact of someone who has tested positive, please review this guidance: https://publichealth.lacounty.gov/acd/ncorona2019/covidquarantine/
  • At-home rapid tests can be ordered for free through the USPS order form: https://www.covidtests.gov/
  • N95s, KN95s or double surgical/procedure masks are required. Single layer cloth masks are not acceptable. Masking outdoors is optional, except as required for outdoor events/programs or faculty outdoor classroom guidance, but highly encouraged in denser outdoor settings. N95s and other masks are available for free in the Office of Student Affairs, Dean of Faculty Office, Facilities, and the nurse clinic.
  • Physical distancing remains a very effective health measure while we navigate the current surge.
  • Pitzer staff and faculty are strongly encouraged to participate in surveillance testing regardless of vaccination status, especially those with high student contact outside of the classroom.
  • Masks will continue to be required in classrooms, labs, and studios. The College Presidents have decided to keep this mask mandate in place across the consortium.

It is critical that even if you are not experiencing any symptoms, the expectation is that you continue to get tested as part of your mandatory COVID-19 screening. To prevent continual spread, it will require continued collective communal effort in our testing, masking, as well as adhering to the ever-evolving health guidelines.

5C Cross-Campus Dining & Pitzer Grab-and-Go Dining

Effective today at dinner, 5C Cross-Campus Dining is suspended until further notice and the Student Deans Committee will re-evaluate this next week in consultation with providers. Indoor seating will continue to remain closed for all Pitzer food service venues: McConnell Dining Hall, Pit-Stop Café, and Shakedown. Hours of operation will remain the same and students may continue to take out their meals from McConnell in a green reusable box or paper to-go box. Additional Pitzer dining updates are forthcoming.

We strongly recommend only eating outdoors in groups no larger than 10 and that you are always masked when in a gathering with others, with the exception of when you are consuming food.

Outdoor Masking at Events, Student Events and Programming Updates & Student Gatherings

At this time, all Pitzer, 5C parties, and 5C student club and organization events and programs are cancelled until further notice. We strongly recommend students only gather with members of their household during this time. Student gatherings will be limited to groups no larger than 10 and must be masked.

Only approved office-led and faculty-led programs will be allowed to continue at this time. This includes faculty lectures, Admitted Student Day and Diversity Program limited to invited participants only with adherence to COVID-19 guidelines.

We will continue to monitor case trends, Los Angeles County guidelines, and seek guidance from our healthcare professionals. Thank you for continuing to be mindful of each other and taking the steps to help protect ourselves, each other, and our greater community.

We appreciate your continued support and efforts to keep our community safe and healthy.

Friday Nurse Notes on Monday - 03.28.22

March 28, 2022

In brief:

  • Pitzer’s policy on indoor masking remains unchanged
  • Everyone on campus regardless of vaccination status must wear a mask indoors
  • N95 masks are available for free in the Student Affairs office, Facilities, and the nurse clinic

Dear Community,

Masking mandates and expectations continue to change across the Claremont Colleges campus, county, state, and nation. This email reminds the community of Pitzer’s masking policy, reiterates the importance of self-protection with N95 masks and provides information from the FDA regarding recalled antigen tests.

Indoor Masking Policy

Our sister campus, CMC, has changed its policy regarding indoor masking. On the CMC campus, indoor masks are no longer required, except for inside classrooms. This is a reminder that Pitzer is not changing its policy at this time. On the Pitzer College campus, all individuals on campus, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a face-covering/mask while indoors.

As masking mandates continue to change throughout California, it’s important to remember the efficacy of N95 masks. If you ever feel uncomfortable about the level of those masked around you, you may wear an N95 mask:

  • When worn consistently and properly, surgical-grade masks, such as N95s provide the highest level of protection from particles, including the virus that causes COVID-19
  • N95s are effective in protecting yourself from particles, even when others around you are not wearing face coverings
  • N95 masks are available for free in the Student Affairs office, Facilities, and the nurse clinic

New FDA Information

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued recalls for specific lot numbers of the Celltrion DiaTrust™ COVID-19 Ag Rapid Test. If you have these rapid tests, please take a moment to check the lot number to confirm your test is accurate.

See below the isolation summary as of Monday 03/28/2022 (this number may vary from the COVID dashboard, pending dashboard daily updates; I will send an update on Friday as well)

Friday Nurse Notes: Masking Mandates and Expectations - 03.04.22

March 4, 2022

Dear Pitzer Community,

Masking mandates and expectations continue to change across the county, state, and nation. Pitzer’s COVID-19 Taskforce has had an opportunity to consult with medical providers, study our campus trends and compliance, and review the results of the recent survey that was conducted.

Please note that while the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) masking guidance may vary, on the Pitzer College campus, all individuals on campus, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a face-covering/mask while indoors. This policy will continue until further notice.

Please continue to adhere to other campus COVID-19 guidance and protocols, and remember that:

  • All individuals on campus, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a face-covering/mask while indoors;
  • When worn consistently and properly, surgical grade masks, such as N95s provide the highest level of protection from particles, including the virus that causes COVID-19;
  • N95s are effective in protecting yourself from particles, even when others around you are not wearing face coverings;
  • N95 masks are available for free in the Student Affairs office, Facilities, and the nurse clinic.

Effective today, masks will no longer be required outdoors at Pitzer with the following exceptions:

  • As instructed by faculty within their course and/or related course activity;
  • As instructed by Campus Life or other offices related to large events and programs;
  • As instructed by employee supervisors;
  • As instructed by sister campuses within academic courses or related activity, dining services, and/or events and programs.

Please keep in mind that per LACDPH guidance, masks must be worn on all public transit and transit hubs, at all health care settings, correctional facilities, shelters and cooling centers, and indoors at youth-serving facilities such as schools, childcare, day camps, etc.

We strongly support persons who may, for medical or personal reasons, continue masking outdoors and will continue to make masks available upon request.

Thank you for your ongoing mindfulness and cooperation. The health and safety of our community continues to be the highest priority for us all.

Sincerely,

Nurse Zephyr

Dining, 5C Events & Residential Guests Updates - 02.10.22

February 10, 2022

Dear Campus Community,

Updates include Pitzer only residential guests, and a return to the following on February 26:

  • Limited and phased cross-campus dining
  • 5C social events
  • 5C residential guests

5C Cross-Campus Dining

Thanks to our community’s ongoing efforts of honoring our Mindful of Each Other community agreement, we are very excited to plan for enhancements to dining, including our beloved cross-campus dining. We are writing to update you on our plans to reopen cross-campus dining at the five undergraduate colleges. We appreciate your patience and support as we manage the challenges posed by COVID-19 and the Omicron variant surge.

We are so pleased that our case rates are declining and that we can make plans to re-start cross campus dining. In doing so, we need to consider two things: our efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 and the operational and staffing challenges that each College is managing in our dining halls.

We are pleased to announce a phased re-start of cross-campus dining effective February 26:

  • Beginning on Saturday, February 26, Pomona, CMC, Scripps and Pitzer will open cross-campus dining with brunch and dinner for the weekends, and dinners only on weekdays.  HMC will open only for brunch on the weekends at this time.

Dining halls and cafes will be open for cross-campus dining, but food trucks are not. Students must follow the policies of the host campus.

We understand that students across the 5Cs want cross-campus dining for breakfast and lunch during the week. Knowing that lunchtime places the greatest demands on our dining halls, we believe it is prudent to begin 5C dining with dinner mealtimes (and with brunch on the weekends) to ensure that our dining halls meet high standards of service.

During the week of March 14(spring break) we will assess our COVID-19 positivity rates and any operational issues with the goal of opening more fully, possibly with breakfast and lunch, after spring break. Assessment by the Student Deans Committee and College Treasurers will continue throughout the semester, reviewing both positivity rates and adherence to COVID policies across the colleges.

Pitzer Faculty and Staff Access to Dining

The above points apply to student dining only. There will not be crossover dining for faculty and staff. Faculty and staff will only be able to dine at their home campus. Pitzer faculty and staff will be able to resume Pitzer McConnell, Pit Stop Café, and Shakedown access beginning, Monday, February 14. To prioritize student access, we ask faculty and staff to please avoid accessing the dining hall between 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Additionally, at Pitzer, we’re looking to open more stations and service options, similar to our service-style this fall, in the McConnell Dining Hall prior to the return to cross-campus dining. We will provide more updates soon, including information about what sister campus cafes will be open to students as we get closer to February 26

5C Social Events

We are also pleased to announce that 5C events and parties may also begin on Saturday, February 26 with the following guidelines:

  • 5C student groups and organizations may host cross-campus events, as long as they abide by the event request and registration processes of the host campus;
  • Pitzer student groups and organizations are expected to work closely Pitzer Campus Life staff, related to program planning support, registration and event request procedures, and safety measures, inclusive of our Mindful of Each Other and student events/gatherings guidelines;
  • Each 5C campus may only host one 5C party during the spring 2022 semester;
  • No 5C parties will be permitted between March 17 and March 27 in recognition of student travel during spring break and the need to monitor positive cases upon return to campus; and
  • 5C events and parties will be limited to 5C or 7C attendees only, with no outside visitors or guests;
  • Pitzer Student Affairs and Campus Life will continue to monitor closely student groups and organization compliance with Mindful of Each Other guidelines and make any guidelines changes as necessary, including, but not limited to, restricting privileges.

Pitzer Only Residential Guests

Effective immediately, students are welcome to have Pitzer-only residential guests and visitors. We appreciate your ongoing mindfulness of our residential guest policies.

5C Residential Guests

Beginning February 26, we will also be resuming the same residential guest policy as we had this fall semester. All 5C community members will be welcome to visit each other in Pitzer residential rooms at that time.

We hope that this approach to 5C dining, events, and residential guests puts us on a path to resume the vibrant social life that is so key to the Claremont consortium experience.

Sincerely,

Laura and Sandra
