Dining, 5C Events & Residential Guests Updates

February 10, 2022

Dear Campus Community,

Updates include Pitzer only residential guests, and a return to the following on February 26:

  • Limited and phased cross-campus dining
  • 5C social events
  • 5C residential guests

5C Cross-Campus Dining

Thanks to our community’s ongoing efforts of honoring our Mindful of Each Other community agreement, we are very excited to plan for enhancements to dining, including our beloved cross-campus dining. We are writing to update you on our plans to reopen cross-campus dining at the five undergraduate colleges. We appreciate your patience and support as we manage the challenges posed by COVID-19 and the Omicron variant surge.

We are so pleased that our case rates are declining and that we can make plans to re-start cross campus dining. In doing so, we need to consider two things: our efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 and the operational and staffing challenges that each College is managing in our dining halls.

We are pleased to announce a phased re-start of cross-campus dining effective February 26:

  • Beginning on Saturday, February 26, Pomona, CMC, Scripps and Pitzer will open cross-campus dining with brunch and dinner for the weekends, and dinners only on weekdays.  HMC will open only for brunch on the weekends at this time.

Dining halls and cafes will be open for cross-campus dining, but food trucks are not. Students must follow the policies of the host campus.

We understand that students across the 5Cs want cross-campus dining for breakfast and lunch during the week. Knowing that lunchtime places the greatest demands on our dining halls, we believe it is prudent to begin 5C dining with dinner mealtimes (and with brunch on the weekends) to ensure that our dining halls meet high standards of service.

During the week of March 14(spring break) we will assess our COVID-19 positivity rates and any operational issues with the goal of opening more fully, possibly with breakfast and lunch, after spring break. Assessment by the Student Deans Committee and College Treasurers will continue throughout the semester, reviewing both positivity rates and adherence to COVID policies across the colleges.

Pitzer Faculty and Staff Access to Dining

The above points apply to student dining only. There will not be crossover dining for faculty and staff. Faculty and staff will only be able to dine at their home campus. Pitzer faculty and staff will be able to resume Pitzer McConnell, Pit Stop Café, and Shakedown access beginning, Monday, February 14. To prioritize student access, we ask faculty and staff to please avoid accessing the dining hall between 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Additionally, at Pitzer, we’re looking to open more stations and service options, similar to our service-style this fall, in the McConnell Dining Hall prior to the return to cross-campus dining. We will provide more updates soon, including information about what sister campus cafes will be open to students as we get closer to February 26

5C Social Events

We are also pleased to announce that 5C events and parties may also begin on Saturday, February 26 with the following guidelines:

  • 5C student groups and organizations may host cross-campus events, as long as they abide by the event request and registration processes of the host campus;
  • Pitzer student groups and organizations are expected to work closely Pitzer Campus Life staff, related to program planning support, registration and event request procedures, and safety measures, inclusive of our Mindful of Each Other and student events/gatherings guidelines;
  • Each 5C campus may only host one 5C party during the spring 2022 semester;
  • No 5C parties will be permitted between March 17 and March 27 in recognition of student travel during spring break and the need to monitor positive cases upon return to campus; and
  • 5C events and parties will be limited to 5C or 7C attendees only, with no outside visitors or guests;
  • Pitzer Student Affairs and Campus Life will continue to monitor closely student groups and organization compliance with Mindful of Each Other guidelines and make any guidelines changes as necessary, including, but not limited to, restricting privileges.

Pitzer Only Residential Guests

Effective immediately, students are welcome to have Pitzer-only residential guests and visitors. We appreciate your ongoing mindfulness of our residential guest policies.

5C Residential Guests

Beginning February 26, we will also be resuming the same residential guest policy as we had this fall semester. All 5C community members will be welcome to visit each other in Pitzer residential rooms at that time.

We hope that this approach to 5C dining, events, and residential guests puts us on a path to resume the vibrant social life that is so key to the Claremont consortium experience.

Sincerely,

Laura and Sandra
