Dear Pitzer Faculty and Staff,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor of English and World Literature Sumangala Bhattacharya as Special Assistant to the President for Conduct Infrastructure Review. This position was created to make the College’s conduct-related policies and infrastructure, including Title IX procedures, more consistent and cohesive.

Professor Bhattacharya will work closely with Pitzer’s governance bodies and administrative offices, including the Title IX Office, Human Resources, and Office of Student Affairs. After auditing our conduct-related policies and procedures, she will make concrete recommendations designed to improve Pitzer’s practices in this critical arena. Professor Bhattacharya will examine the College’s entire conduct process to ensure that we have the necessary resources, training, and structure in place. Her responsibilities include reviewing and helping strengthen our data-gathering process, access to relevant information, and our conduct-related reporting system.

Professor Bhattacharya is uniquely qualified to be our first Special Assistant to the President for Conduct Infrastructure Review and has agreed to serve in this position through May 31, 2023. In addition to being a Pitzer faculty member, she is a practicing attorney who runs ImmPowered Law Office, an immigration law firm specializing in asylum and humanitarian visas, naturalizations, family and employment-based immigration, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) renewals, and student immigration issues. She is also the Board President of Refugee Children Center, a Department of Justice-accredited nonprofit providing legal and social services for immigrant families, and a volunteer attorney for Riverside Legal Aid and the Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project.

I look forward to working with Professor Bhattacharya to help create a superior conduct process for Pitzer. Please join me in congratulating her on her new role.

Provida Futuri,

Jill A. Klein

Interim President
