Getting to the Core: Self, Systems and Oppression, Vision, and Action

The Writing Center, Community Engagement Center (CEC) and Center for Asian Pacific American Students (CAPAS) are collaborating on a series of training for student fellows and staff titled, “Getting to the Core: Self, Systems and Oppression, Vision, and Action.” This initiative is an ongoing and immersive process that allows all participants to engage in building and sustaining a community of inclusion—to connect with and support each other, for each other.

The first session, “Journeying Toward Knowing,” was facilitated in October by scholar-activist Margo Okazawa-Rey. Students shared personal anecdotes and passions, and collectively created community principles on how we will move forward into the series during the academic year. Afterwards, participants shared their thoughts about the meeting. Below are a few of those thoughts:

“It was incredible to be heard and to be listened [to].”

“[This meeting] created a safe space for people to be vulnerable and honest.”

“I feel like I want to be better. It is a very unusual feeling for me.”

“I feel at peace, open, and full. It was so nice to be honest and take risks and try not to doubt yourself as much as usual, which was only possible because others did the same.”
