Social Media, Arts, & Communications (SMAC)

AAIR Open Mic 2022

Art is a powerful and intentional vehicle for how we communicate and connect within and beyond our communities. This contributes to building strong, meaningful, and engaging relationships.

1 Annual Storyteller's Festival

bringing art, film, poerty, music and community to Pitzer College!

The Social Media, Arts, & Communications (SMAC) Pillar aims to amplify the messages of students, faculty, and community partners via effective media usage and community building. By integrating all three of our namesakes- social media, art, communication- we can build creative spaces that empower and amplify individuals and organizations working toward a more just and equitable tomorrow.  For more information, email CEC Program Coordinator, Tim Lewis.

Community Engagement

Students enrolled in various Social Responsibility Praxis courses at Pitzer are able to provide support to weekend arts education classes to youth at the Sam and Alfreda Maloof House in Upland, CA. The Maloof House is a National Historic Site where woodworking education among other arts learning opportunities occur to benefit the surrounding community.

Students enrolled in select courses are able to participate in the communal co-creation of public art experiences in the local community. Recent examples of this work involve community murals at schools and local partners, workshops held in/by/for community spaces, an Afro-Colombian drumming workshop, and archiving efforts in film, text, audio media, and visual media.

By request from our Community Partners, we are able to connect students with Media related opportunities including but not limited to: social media management/support, graphics, event support, media support for community-initiated projects, and translation support.

Courses

Check out the Social Responsibility Praxis (SRX) and community engaged courses Pitzer has to offer that have been supported or collaborate with the Social Media, Arts, & Communications.
