Information + Resources

Debating for Democracy (D4D)™ is a distinctive campus-based co-curricular program that represents the mission of Project Pericles in action. On each campus, Periclean students research, develop, and advocate their opinions and positions on current public policy issues. Students will produce a co-written, two-page letter to an elected official advocating for a legislative response to a current issue. The primary goal of D4D is to inspire and encourage all participants to become successful and resourceful advocates in their community. Out of the thirty Periclean institutions, five winning teams will be selected to receive $500 towards mobilizing on their issue back at their home college the following year.

On Campus Collaborations

Beginning Spring 2023, the People's Pitzer has collaborated with the Pitzer College Art Galleries on featuring an artist in the alcoves of Scott Hall Lobby in celebration for World Day of Social Justice. These exhibits are generally on display on the national "World Day of Social Justice" until the end of the spring semester.

Learn more about artists we've featured here.

In the 2024 Fall Election season, TPP hosted a series of events including:

  • National Voter Registration Day
  • Voter Registration Drives
  • Voter Education Week
  • a panel of faculty to discuss civic engagement hosted in the Lenzner Gallery
  • an absentee voter event
  • an election watch party, supported by Campus Life and the Presidents offfice

In collaboration with the President's Office, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), NAACP Pomona Valley, LA County Sheriff's Department, a Civil Rights Institute of Inland Southern California, and the Inland Empire Anti-Hate Coalition. The forum focused on state and county practices addressing hate crimes. Local Organizations working on the issue provided information and resources to the Pitzer community.

Community Engagement

TPP is committed to promoting civic engagement and democratic practices on campus. Activities have included:

  •  Letter writing to elected officials through Project Pericles "D4D: Debating for Democracy Letters to an Elected Official" competition
  • A Presidential commitment to democracy
  • All-In Campus Democracy Challenge
  • The Ballot Bowl

In collaboration with Activist Margo Okazawa-Rey, the CEC, Writing Center and CAPAS sought to build programming to support student leaders during the difficult period of the pandemic and social unrest. With programs and trainings planned across the spring semester (2021-2022), Getting to the Core as a group sought to speak to the intrinsic motivations that drive student leaders to their civic and community engagement. Unlike many of the co-curricular workshop series that already existed, this group focused on building rapport and dialogue within one cohort of students from various scenes. In connecting their own experiences and backgrounds with knowledge from popular education frameworks and critical race theory, students were given the opportunity to support one another through cathartic exchanges of communications and reflections.

This was funding by the Racial Justice Initiative, CEC, Writing Center and CAPAS

In collaboration with CASA Pitzer and the Highlander Movement School, 2 faculty, 1 staff, and 4 students are invited to participate in the Alternative Spring Break at the Highlander Center in Knoxville, TN. The practices learned at the center inspire upcoming community-engaged goals. Participants of the retreat dedicate the following year to achieving goals set while at the center.
