Sagehen Athletics Triumphs in Academic Rankings

Pomona-Pitzer student-athletes score high GPAs and other academic honors for 2023–24

Who says you can’t be a good student and a good athlete? Pomona-Pitzer’s athletics program encourages well-rounded excellence in both the mind and body. As a result, our student-athletes received many honors for their scholarly achievements in the 2023–24 year.

The women’s lacrosse team had the highest GPA in all divisions for the third year in a row. The women’s track and field team boasted the highest GPA in Division III, while men’s track and field earned the second-highest GPA. Meanwhile, our other teams in volleyball, swimming and diving, water polo, tennis, basketball, and baseball have also gotten top marks for their academic achievements.

Additionally, 488 Pomona-Pitzer student-athletes were selected as 2023–24 SCIAC All-Academic Team members. These individuals must maintain a cumulative 3.4 grade-point average and complete their season as a member of the active roster to be eligible for selection. Sagehens who earned this achievement played in baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, volleyball, and water polo.

Women’s Track and Field Receives USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Honors

The Pomona-Pitzer women’s track and field team earned All-Academic Team status as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Sagehens achieved a team GPA of 3.863, which was the highest in Division III. Two individual athletes also earned All-Academic status.

Women’s Volleyball Achieves AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll

The Pomona-Pitzer women’s volleyball team earned the Team Academic Honor Roll as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). More than 1,400 collegiate and high school volleyball programs maintained a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale to earn the award. The Sagehens had a team GPA of 3.66. This is the fifth consecutive year that the team has made this achievement.

Women’s Swimming and Diving Named CSCAA Scholar All-American Team 

The Pomona-Pitzer women’s swimming and diving program achieved the fifth-highest team GPA in Division III in spring 2024 as announced by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The team had a collective GPA of 3.83.

Twelve Sagehens were named for First-Team Scholar All-America and two were selected for Second-Team.

Women’s Water Polo Receives 20 ACWPC All-Academic Awards 

The Pomona-Pitzer women’s water polo team had 20 student-athletes who earned All-Academic Awards from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC).

IWLCA Recognizes Women’s Lacrosse for Honor Roll

The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced Pomona-Pitzer as a 2024 IWLCA Academic Merit Squad, a designation awarded to the top team in each division and the NAIA with the highest team GPA for the preceding academic year. The Sagehens had the highest GPA in all divisions for the third year in a row. 

The IWLCA also announced that 13 members of the Pomona-Pitzer women’s lacrosse team are on the Division III Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible for this honor, student-athletes must be a junior, senior, or graduate student and have earned a cumulative academic GPA of 3.5 or greater.

Women’s Tennis Earns ITA All-Academic Team 

The Pomona-Pitzer women’s tennis team earned All-Academic Team honors as well as having 13 Scholar-Athletes selected by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Teams earn All-Academic status for having a collective GPA of 3.2 or higher. Scholar-Athlete status is awarded to students for earning a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Men’s Track & Field Achieves Team USTFCCCA Academic Award 

The USTFCCCA announced that the Pomona-Pitzer men’s track & field team earned All-Academic Team status. The Sagehens earned All-Academic Team status after they achieved a team GPA of 3.768, which was second in Division III. Eight individuals also received All-Academic status.

Men’s Basketball Receives NABC Team Academic Excellence Award

The Pomona-Pitzer men’s basketball team received the Team Academic Excellence Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). To receive this award, a program must achieve a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. Pomona-Pitzer is one of three SCIAC teams to earn the award this season.

The NABC Honors Court also recognized seven individual Sagehens who finished the 2023–24 year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.

Men’s Swimming and Diving Named CSCAA Scholar All-American Team

The Pomona-Pitzer men’s swimming and diving team was named a Scholar All-American Team after tying with MIT and Vassar for the tenth-highest GPA at 3.71. Six Sagehens were named for First-Team Scholar All-America, and three were selected for Second-Team.

Men’s Water Polo Receives 21 ACWPC All-Academic Awards

The Pomona-Pitzer men’s water polo team had 21 student-athletes who earned All-Academic Awards from the ACWPC.

Men’s Baseball Earns ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award 

The Pomona-Pitzer men’s baseball team earned the Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). The award honors teams that posted a GPA of 3.0 or above.

The Pomona-Pitzer men’s tennis team earned All-Academic Team honors as well as having 12 Scholar-Athletes announced by the ITA. Teams earn All-Academic status for having a collective GPA of 3.2 or higher. Scholar-Athlete status is awarded to students for earning a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
