A Critical Lens on the College: Annual updates charting Pitzer's journey toward carbon neutrality.

Pitzer classroom historical

Pitzer’s approach to carbon neutrality stems from a commitment Pitzer made as a charter signatory to the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). This committed the college to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

We now know that 2050 is far too late to take meaningful action toward carbon neutrality. In 2025 we are undertaking a more robust planning process to move the needle on this important issue.

Common strategies for moving toward carbon neutrality include:

  • Renewable Energy: Switching to renewable energy sources.
  • Energy Efficiency: Improving energy efficiency in buildings and operations.
  • Sustainable Transportation: Promoting sustainable transportation options.
  • Supplier Engagement: Engaging with suppliers to reduce emissions throughout the supply chain for food, waste, materials.
  • Carbon Offsetting: Using carbon offsets to neutralize remaining emissions.

At Pitzer, progress toward these goals has been realized through both the divestment from fossil fuels in Pitzer’s endowment and campus strategies but we have an urgent need to establish an action plan that will be holistic in its framework, and go above and beyond normative categories for campus carbon footprint assessment.
