Dear Pitzer Community,

I am writing to share the news of the recent passing of James “Jim” Bogen, professor of philosophy emeritus and a valued member of the Pitzer and Claremont community.

Jim joined the Pitzer faculty in 1967 and served with distinction for more than three decades, shaping our Philosophy Field Group and contributing profoundly to the interdisciplinary spirit that defines our College. His work in the philosophy and history of science, including influential scholarship on epistemology, causation, and the philosophy of neuroscience, earned him national recognition and the admiration of colleagues across the academy.

Current Pitzer Professor of Philosophy Brian Keeley observes that “Jim was a trailblazer in Philosophy, being one of the earliest philosophers to take a serious look at what the study of neuroscience can tell us about the nature of science more generally. Despite being a ‘philosopher,’ he helped establish both the Neuroscience and the Science, Technology & Society programs in Claremont. He was a philosopher that scientists took seriously."

Even after his retirement from Pitzer in 2001, Jim continued to teach and conduct research as part of the History and Philosophy of Science program at the University of Pittsburgh, where his intellectual generosity and collegiality were deeply valued.

Jim’s election as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2013 stands as one testament to his far-reaching impact, as do his many publications and the generations of students he inspired. We also hold in our thoughts his wife, Pitzer alumna Deborah Bogen, an accomplished poet and novelist.

Jim’s passing is a meaningful loss for Pitzer, for the broader intellectual community, and for all who were shaped by his teaching and scholarship. We will share any information we receive about memorial arrangements. For now, I wish you fondest memories of Jim and hope you will join me in extending heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends.\

In Deepest Sympathy,

Strom C. Thacker
