Passing of Russell M. Pitzer
Announcement of the passing of Russell M. Pitzer
It is with sadness that I share news of the passing of Pitzer College Trustee Emeritus Russell M. Pitzer, father of Trustee Ken Pitzer, on May 25, 2026.
Russ served as a member of the Pitzer College Board of Trustees from 1988 to 2012, a period during which he provided thoughtful leadership and steadfast support to the College. As the grandson of the College’s founder, Russell Kelly Pitzer, Russ carried forward a deep and enduring commitment to Pitzer and its mission. His years of service reflected both his family’s longstanding connection to the College and his own personal dedication to its success and future.
The Pitzer family has played an important role in the College’s history since its founding, and Russ’s service continued that relationship across generations. Through his leadership, engagement, and generosity, he helped strengthen the institution while remaining committed to the values that have distinguished Pitzer throughout its history.
Russ’s obituary offers a fuller reflection on his remarkable life, distinguished career, and lasting impact.
Please keep the Pitzer family in your thoughts as they mourn the loss of Russ and celebrate his life and legacy. If you would like to send a note of condolence to the family, the President’s Office will be coordinating those efforts. Please contact Melanie Lacy Sorenson at Melanie_Lacy@pitzer.edu for additional information.
With deepest sympathy,
Strom C. Thacker
President
