Requesting Housing Accommodations
In compliance with applicable state and federal laws, students with documented disabilities or access needs may be considered for housing-related accommodations. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are intended to support students who experience barriers in their housing environment. Reasonable accommodations are determined following an individualized assessment of each request. Among the factors considered in determining reasonable accommodations for students are:
- The nature of the student's disability including the student's current symptoms and limitations
- The functional limitations necessitating the requested accommodation(s)
- Whether there is any alternate accommodation that is equally as effective in meeting the identified need
- Whether the requested accommodation will alter the essential requirements of campus housing
- The appropriateness and essential nature of the requested accommodations
Please note that a diagnosis and documentation alone do not guarantee accommodations.
Steps to Apply for Housing Accommodations
Step 1: Complete the Application and Submit Documentation
Fill out the application and upload your documentation using the following link. Please note that students must also complete the Housing Selection Process by the deadline to be considered. Incoming first year students should apply only after admittance to Pitzer.
Housing Application
It is highly recommended that you submit the Housing Documentation Form with your application.Housing Documentation Form
Alternatively, you may submit documentation that meets the following guidelines:
The documentation must be on letterhead, typed, dated, and signed. The information must be from a qualified/licensed professional (e.g., physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, etc.), who is unrelated to the student, and whose credentials permit the evaluation of the disability. The following guidelines are provided to assist students in obtaining documentation to establish the need for reasonable accommodations:
A specific diagnosis
Description of the current functional limitations and symptoms
Licensure and experience of provider (should not be a relative)
What and how are any major life activities substantially limited by the disability or condition?
What is the frequency and severity of the limitations?
Recommended accommodations
Step 2: Our Team Will Review Applications and Respond Accordingly
Residence Life & Housing will do their best to match up accommodations with listed preferences regarding residence hall or roommate, but ultimately will place students in a space that meets their approved accommodation needs. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact academicsupport@pitzer.edu or housing@pitzer.edu respectively.
Step 3: Reapply Each Year
Each academic year, students with housing accommodations will need to reapply for consideration.
