Native Indigenous Initiatives Working Group

In Fall 2024, Vice President of Academic Affairs (AA) created the Native Indigenous Working Group convened by CEC Director Tricia Morgan to create meaningful and impactful connections between Native Indigenous Initiatives (NII) and other Academic Affairs departments to strengthen and enhance NII programming. The NII Working Group was structured to be holistic, Native/Indigenous driven with a slow and deliberate approach.  

Academic Affairs Collaborations

The following offices/departments are currently works in progress.

Led by Ahmed Alwishah, Associate Dean of Faculty and Professor of Philosophy

Ahmed curated a lunch series supported by the Racial Justice Initiative with an emphasis on hiring more Native/Indigenous faculty, providing faculty development on appropriate Native protocols and practices.

Led by Susan Phillips, Director of the Robert Redford Conservancy for Southern California, and Professor of Environmental Analysis

In collaboration with the CEC, the RRC collaborated on a shared calendar of Native/Indigenous events to centralize and make accessible to all interested parties, including the Annual NII Summit, and also provided a space to host NII events.

Fellowships provided support in identifying fellowships of interest for Native/Indigenous peoples & topics and provided application support.

Led by Leeshawn Cradoc Moore, Director of Institutional Research and Assessment

IRA provided support in strengthening assessment of Native/Indigenous experiences at Pitzer and gathered more accurate counts of Native/Indigenous people at the College.

IGLAS and JEC incorporate Native/Indigenous Inside-Out students into NII programming & Native Graduation held in partnership with Pomona College's Native Indigenous Resource Center (NIRC).

The Registrar's office worked to demarcate Native/Indigenous course offerings at Pitzer and work with students to update student information systems with self-identified Native/Indigenous status to provide more accurate count of enrolled students.

Academic and Strategic Planning incorporated a NII Working Group memo into the current strategic visioning process and accreditation process for the College.

Led by Emily Butts, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Pitzer Art Galleries

The Pitzer Art Galleries worked closely on collaborative grants to support Native Eco-Arts programming.

Led by Stephanie Liu-Rojas, Writing Center Director

The Writing Center provided support in a "Personal Statement" writing workshop for Native Youth and collaborated on the annual Storyteller's Festival.
