Dear Pitzer College Community,

I write tonight to address a development that may raise questions or concerns for some of you. Recently, Pomona College received a formal request from the U.S. House Committee on Education and Workforce [PDF] seeking information related to campus protests and activities at Pomona since October 7, 2023. Pomona College shared an update with their community about this earlier today.

Pitzer leadership has been following the situation and its potential implications for our community closely. While Pitzer is not the recipient of or respondent to the Committee’s request, the College is conferring with counsel to gain a fuller understanding of our options. We also remain in regular communication with our counterparts across the consortium.

I recognize that situations like this can raise concerns, and I want to reassure you that Pitzer remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding our core values, the protection of student privacy, and ensuring a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all. We will continue to abide by all applicable state and federal laws, including FERPA (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), which protects the confidentiality of student educational records.

Please know that Pitzer is here to support you, and we encourage you to utilize the resources below should you have questions or need support.

Thank you for continuing to look out for one another and for upholding the values that define our community.

Provida Futuri,

Strom C. Thacker
President
