The Benjamin Godsill ’00 and Anna Burns Student Apprenticeship Award provides first-generation and students of color opportunities for in-depth curatorial experience and a bridge to long-term museum careers.
Pitzer College Art Galleries are grateful to Benjamin Gosdill ’00 and Anna Burns for their generosity and shared commitment to diversity, as well as to Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) and Fulcrum Arts, for working in partnership with Pitzer College Art Galleries to provide Pitzer students opportunities for mentoring and curatorial experience through this initiative.
Benjamin Godsill ’00 and Anna Burns Student Apprenticeship Award
The Godsill ’00 Burns Apprenticeship Award is offered on a competitive basis to Pitzer first-generation and students of color. The award seeks to create opportunities for individuals from groups under-represented in the museum field by offering in-depth curatorial experience and providing a professional bridge to long-term museum careers.
The Student Apprentice Program
Students who receive this award will be selected by the Pitzer College Art Galleries director in conjunction with the Galleries Advisory Council (faculty, staff, and Los Angeles-based arts professionals). Students will work part-time (an average of 10 hours a week) during the academic semester (12 weeks) at the hosting institution. Apprentices will enrich their knowledge of contemporary art and deepen their understanding of museum practices through hands-on training in exhibition work, gallery management, and public arts education.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Curatorial apprentices will participate in a range of curatorial activities that will vary according to the needs of the host institution. These functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Exhibition production and installation
- Exhibition research
- Catalogue production
- Assist with the development and production of collateral programming including lectures, panels, and symposia
- Develop content for social media platforms for promotion of exhibitions and programs
PROJECT ASSIGNMENTS
- Write a one-page summary of the projects worked on and major duties performed.
- Write a 1,000-word paper on one of the exhibitions or projects that you worked on at Pitzer College Art Galleries or at the hosting institution (conceptual and or thematic framework, curatorial process, and physical manifestation).
- Give a PPT presentation to Galleries’ staff on the work performed during the internship.
- Give a short public lecture at Pitzer College Art Galleries to campus community upon completion of internship
HONORARIM
Apprentices will receive $3,000 per semester
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
Must be an enrolled Pitzer College student.
