“Many Cultures Create Mathematics: A Cool Example and a Pitzer Perspective”

We start by describing a variety of mathematical results from non-European cultures, including China, Egypt, Babylonia, the Americas, India, and the Islamic world. We then walk through one fascinating example in depth, from the Malekula culture of the Republic of Vanuatu in the South Pacific. We conclude with a deeper understanding of the place of mathematics in human history and culture.

Racial/Ethnic and Immigrant Justice

Professor Steffanie Guillermo will talk about her research and courses that
address the topics of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. In this session, we will learn how experimental psychology can help us understand societal inequities. Professor Guillermo will also share how she collaborates with students on various projects related to racial/ethnic and immigrant justice. The talk will conclude with a discussion of policy implications.
