Data Management and Integrity Group
Pitzer's decision to establish a program of data management and integrity reflects a shared understanding that timely access to meaningful information is essential to our educational mission. Deriving insight from data is the heart of analytics, and its purpose is to support student success and institutional effectiveness as well as areas of assessment.

Data Management
With a focus on developing operating standards, the Data Management and Integrity group (DMI) will help guide the usage of Pitzer data. Implementation of DMI standards will fall to appropriate staff and functions at the college. To ensure continuity between policy and practice, the group (or a subset thereof) will liaise with Data, Systems, and Integrations team, Institutional Research & Assessment, and Information Technology.
DMI will disseminate advisory statements that address specific issues related to data use, data quality, and data flow. These practices will be posted clearly in the appropriate location(s) and will be subject to periodic review. A summary of DMI changes in standards and best practices will be provided to Senior Staff annually or as requested and communicated broadly to all relevant stakeholders.
The work of the DMI group revolves around three core areas:
Data Use
- Develop college standards on the protection of institutional data.
- Review Pitzer Data usage for major systems selection.
- Support establishing standards for vetting vendors that will have access to college data.
- Support establishing standards for reviewing and approving security protocols for all third-party software systems.
- Provide guidance and training on data standards; best practices in data use and management; and the dissemination and protection of college data.
Data Quality
- Develop, document, and make accessible data standards for core institutional metrics and data fields.
- Develop procedures and criteria for vetting data that will become part of the college's central data warehouse (DW).
- Support the development of a data integrity program to resolve issues relating to duplication, version control, inconsistency, and/or clarity.
Data Flow (Architecture)
- Establish 'source of record' for core institutional metrics and data fields.
- Support standards and protocols for the architecture of data flow between systems, prioritizing long-term analytics for the college over immediate operational exigencies.
- Help guide the standards for systems integrations.
