Gender-Neutral Language: Embracing Inclusivity in the Classroom

Dr. Liana Stepanyan and Mercedes Fages Agudo will address the use of non-binary language in the Spanish classroom. They will introduce their recent publication, Sin Fronteras: Inclusive Spanish Grammar Textbook, a resource designed to promote gender inclusivity in language learning. During the talk, they will share practical ideas and examples of activities to integrate non-binary language structures into your curriculum, providing valuable insights for fostering inclusivity in the classroom.
Maria Mercedes Fages Agudo is a master lecturer and coordinator of Spanis II at the University of Southern California. She also directs Feliz en la Comunidad, a service-learning program that fosters community engagement by allowing students to apply their academic knowledge to real-world challenges in the Greater Los Angeles area.
Liana Stepanyan is a professor (teaching) of Spanish and coordinator of Spanish III at the University of Southern California. Her research focuses on second-language acquisition, non-binary language, and the inclusion of primary sources in courses.
