Claremont, Calif. (May 2, 2018)—Pitzer College Associate Professor of Sociology Azamat K. Junisbai has been selected as a 2018-19 Fulbright US Scholar.

An authority on Central Asia, Junisbai will return to Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where he was an undergraduate sociology student in the mid-1990s. He will teach two graduate-level sociology courses and offer faculty workshops during his year as a visiting professor.

Since arriving at Pitzer in 2009, Junisbai has looked for opportunities to share his knowledge and experiences with sociology students in Kazakhstan.

“The Fulbright Award would make this once fanciful idea entirely realistic,” he said in his Fulbright application. “An opportunity to give back by teaching and advising students at KazNU is deeply meaningful to me for personal reasons.”

Junisbai’s Pitzer courses include Sociology and Its View of the World, Social Inequality, Contemporary Central Asia, Model Minority and Perpetual Foreigner: Asians in America.

His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, National Council for Eurasian and East European Research, and the International Research & Exchanges Board.
