Claremont, Calif. (June 24, 2009)—Pitzer College received two grants from the Mellon Foundation to expand academic programs in the areas of global communities and environmental science.
The Mellon Foundation gave $600,000 for the development of programs in Pitzer’s Center for the Study of Global Communities. The Center’s goal is to engage students in comparative study of global issues and help them become effective citizens in an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world.
Mellon also granted $1.5 million to the Claremont undergraduate colleges (Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College, Pomona College and Scripps College) to support a new collaborative and interdisciplinary Environmental Analysis Program. Over the last five years, enrollment in existing environmental analysis and environmental science courses across the five colleges grew by 109%. The grant from the Mellon Foundation will allow the Colleges to pool and shift resources so courses and research opportunities will be expanded and added to respond to student demand.
