Jacob Yasgoor '17Claremont, Calif. (April 1, 2015)—Pitzer College student Jacob Yasgoor of the Sagehens Men’s Tennis team was named SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week (all sports) by the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference today. The Sagehens swept the honors, with Emily Kuo PO ’18 of the Women’s Tennis team  earning Female Athlete of the Week honors.

Yasgoor earned the honor after recording perfect marks in singles against some top competition. He was 3-0 in singles with straight set wins against No. 3 Middlebury, No. 13 Chicago and No. 14 Williams to help the Sagehens to a 5-0 week that ended with the Sagehens Men’s Tennis team being ranked No. 4 in the nation.

Yasgoor’s performances were huge as the Sagehens earned three close wins over top 15 teams (5-4 over Middlebury and Chicago, 6-3 over Williams). He also was held out of singles but earned a doubles point in a narrow 5-4 win over No. 21 UC Santa Cruz.

Yasgoor, meanwhile, improved to 14-3 on the year in singles, with his only losses coming against No. 1 Amherst, No. 2 CMS and while playing at No. 1 (instead of his usual No. 2) against Point Loma Nazarene, an NAIA school. He was dominant in his three wins this week, all against top 15 teams, outscoring his opponents by a combined 36-15.

The Sagehens tennis teams will be back in action for a tripleheader on Friday, with the men facing No. 16 Gustavus Adolphus at 10 a.m. and Westmont (No. 8 in NAIA) at 4 p.m., with the women facing Occidental in a SCIAC match in between at 2 p.m.
