Claremont, Calif. (February 12, 2015)—For the fifth consecutive year, The Chronicle of Higher Education named Pitzer College as the top producer of student Fulbright Fellows among all US colleges in the “bachelor’s institutions” category with nineteen 2014-15 student Fulbright Fellows. In recent years, approximately 10 percent of the College’s graduating class has won Fulbright Fellowships, and the College has been the per capita leader for 11 of the past dozen years.
“Congratulations to Pitzer College’s next generation of Fulbright fellows. We look forward to following your teaching and research as you continue to affect positive change in the world. The Fulbright program is the United States’ premier program for fostering peaceful change and increased global social responsibility,” said Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley, who was appointed by President Barack Obama to the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and now serves as its vice chair.
The Chronicle’s list of top Fulbright producers is based on the number of students and recent alumni who apply through their college or university and both receive and accept offers to participate in the Fulbright US Student Program. Pitzer’s 2014-15 Fulbright Fellows are: Alaitz Aritza ’14, Samantha Bromley-Coolidge ’14, Evelyn Byer ’14, Katherine Cabrera ’14, Zavi Engles ’14, Danny Feinberg ’13, Shiyana Gunasekara ’14, Mayse Jarbawi ’13, Minji Lee ’14, Benjamin Levine ’14, Zoey Martin-Lockhart ’14, Elizabeth Pedersen ’14, Autumn Pham ’14, Nicole Pilar ’14, Alexander Rawding ’14, Claire Thoman Tedford ’14, Cesar Vargas ’14, Sarah Wright ’13 and Mia Yamashiro ’14. Two Pitzer students declined the award and one alumna applied at large; they were not included in the Chronicle’s count.
“Fulbright has become part of student culture at Pitzer,” said Pitzer’s Associate Dean for Global and Local Programs Nigel Boyle, who serves as the College’s Fulbright Program adviser. “Each class of students passes on the passion to engage with the rest of the world to succeeding classes.”
The Claremont Colleges received a combined 48 2014-15 student Fulbrights – Scripps College (11) Pomona College (10) and Claremont McKenna (8) – more than any research university including Harvard University, Yale University and Princeton University.
