Claremont, Calif. (July 16, 2013) — The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Division III recognized members of the Sagehens Women’s Water Polo team following an outstanding season that concluded with a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) championship. Alyssa Woodward ’15 was named to the ACWPC 2013 All-American first team. Katya Schaefer ’16 earned honorable mention All-American honors. The Sagehens coach Alex Rodriguez was named the Division III Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year.
The ACWPC also recognized Woodward and Schaefer’s teammates. Sarah Tuggy PO ’13 was named the Women’s Water Polo Player of the Year and was joined on the ACWPC All-America first team by Sarah Westcott PO ’15. Mahalia Prater-Fahey PO ’15 earned honorable mention.
Woodward received first-team All-American honors for the second straight year after scoring 88 goals to lead the Sagehens in 2013. Schaefer had 73 in her first season with the Sagehens and was also named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year.
Rodriguez earned the ACWPC Division III Coach of the Year honor for the second year in a row. During the 2011-12 academic year, he was named the Division III Coach of the Year for both Men’s Water Polo and Women’s Water Polo. He has guided the Women’s Water Polo program to five SCIAC titles and NCAA Tournament bids in his eight seasons at the helm.
The Sagehens Women’s Water Polo team finished the 2013 season with a 19-18 overall record, while earning the SCIAC title with a 10-7 win over Redlands in the championship match.
