Claremont, Calif. (February 20, 2012) — Travis Rooke-Ley ’12 continued his impressive play on the mound for the Pitzer-Pomona Baseball team this spring, as he improved to 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA by allowing only one run in a 19-1 win over Caltech in the first game of a three-game sweep for the Sagehens. Rooke-Ley struck out eight and allowed four hits in six innings of work, as he has allowed only one earned run in his last three starts combined, helping the Sagehens out to a 6-1-1 overall record and a 5-1 mark in the SCIAC.
Plenty of Pitzer athletes contributed to a big offensive weekend for the baseball team as well. Second baseman E.J. Lopez ’15 had six hits and drove in six runs in the three-game series, while shortstop Sam Fox ’15 was an impressive 6-for-9 at the plate, as the Pitzer freshman double-play combination continues to have an impact on the team’s success.
Kyle Roland ’14 was 5-for-11 and had two RBI in all three games, while Coleman Lukas ’14 had five RBI in the first game of the Saturday doubleheader with a two-run double and a three-run homer. Jackson Badger ’14 was 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI in his one start of the weekend, while Erik Munzer ’13 was 4-for-12 with three RBI in the three games. Isaac Richard ’15 also reached base in all three of his plate appearances (2-for-2 with a walk).
Jana London ’14 had a key role in helping the Women’s Lacrosse team to a 26-18 win over Whittier in its home opener on Saturday. Pitzer-Pomona led for most of the game, but Whittier rallied in the second half to tie the game 15-15. London then stepped up with two goals in a 4-0 run as the Sagehens took control of the game with a 19-15 lead and the Poets weren’t able to threaten again. Kaitlin Jones ’14 also had a pair of goals for the Sagehens, which travel to Redlands on Wednesday before facing Occidental at home on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Women’s Basketball team closed out its season on a high note with a 73-67 win over Whittier. Emi Hashizume ’14 had a big day off the bench for the Sagehens, tallying 15 points, including a perfect 6-6 at the foul line, two of which came in the final minute to help seal the win. Ruthie Shapiro ’15 had a strong all-around game as well, finishing with nine points, five rebounds and four assists.
Swimming and Diving got the SCIAC Championships underway on Sunday, the first of three days of competition at the event. Avery Barron ’15 came in eighth in the women’s diving competition, while Andrew Savage ’15 contributed to a 200-yard men’s freestyle relay team which finished a close second. The SCIAC Championships will continue on Monday and Tuesday at South Gate pool.
The Softball team fell on the short end of a doubleheader with defending SCIAC champion Redlands on Saturday, but Bri Marcantoni ’12 was a bright spot at the plate, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. The Sagehens will be back in action at home this weekend for a Saturday doubleheader with Occidental.
The Track and Field teams got underway this weekend by hosting the All-Comers Meet at Steelhe Track. Adam Faison ’15 had a strong first performance in the 1000 meters, coming in third in his section with a time of 2:38.02
