Claremont, Calif. (April 23, 2012) — Pitzer College alumna Ramona Ausubel ’01 has released her first novel, No One Is Here Except All of Us, published by Riverhead Books.
Set in Europe during World War II, No One Is Here Except All of Us unfolds in a tiny Jewish village in Romania in 1939. Lena, the 11-year-old daughter of a cabbage farmer, serves as the narrator, telling the story of Romanian villagers who “reinvent the world” to escape the reality of war.
Ausubel based her young protagonist on stories she heard about her own great-grandmother. From the distance of multiple generations, Ausubel writes about the Holocaust in prose that reviewers have called luminous, acute and beautiful, with sentences that are “tiny works of art.”
Ausubel, who majored in poetry and cultural studies at Pitzer, has had her short stories published in The New Yorker and The Paris Review. She was a finalist for the Pushcart Prize.
As part of the 5C Alumni Reunion Weekend 2012 at Pitzer College, Ausubel will give a book talk on Saturday, April 28 at 10:15 a.m. at the Grove House Outdoor Classroom.
