About the Dean of Faculty
Chawne Kimber, Ph.D.
Professor Kimber earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematics at the University of Florida, a master of science in mathematics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a doctorate in mathematics at the University of Florida. Chawne is a specialist in ordered algebraic structures and is known for collaborating on solutions of decades-old open problems in hyperarchimedean lattice-ordered groups by developing new understanding of the Yosida embedding.
Devoted to the model and outcomes of small liberal arts colleges, Chawne has spent her career engaging in teaching, scholarship, and service at Wesleyan University (CT) where she conducted postdoctoral work, and at Lafayette College (PA) where she was the Thomas Roy and Lura Forrest Jones Professor of Mathematics and won awards for teaching and mentorship. In 2021, Professor Kimber moved to serve as Dean of the College at Washington and Lee University (VA). At Lafayette and W&L, she built successful and sustained programs to support inclusive STEM education, community engagement, and a sense of belonging for students, faculty, and staff.
When not proving theorems, Chawne is an internationally recognized textile artist whose work is exhibited in and in the collections of major museums.
