The Sagehens’ Stellar Seasons

Pomona-Pitzer Athletics teams were back in full swing during the 2021–22 academic year, racking up nine Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) regular season championships, eight post-season SCIAC Tournament Championships, and three national crowns. And student-athletes’ performances off the field and in the classroom also stood out: When the SCIAC announced its 2021–22 All-Academic Team this summer, the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens led the way with 494 of the 2,603 all-academic honorees.

Below are a few Sagehens Athletics headlines and highlights from spring season and beyond.

Men’s Water Polo and Women’s Water Polo won both SCIAC Tournament Championships and USA Water Polo Division III National Championships. This spring, Women’s Water Polo won against Whittier in the SCIAC Tournament Championship and the USA Water Polo Division III National Championship.

Earlier in the academic year, the Sagehens Men’s Water Polo team earned the 2021 SCIAC Postseason Tournament Championship over SCIAC rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) and again defeated CMS for the US Water Polo Men’s Division III National Championship in December 2021.

Men’s Basketball won the SCIAC Tournament for the third time in as many years, and Men’s Cross Country brought home a championship for the third time in four years and its second consecutive NCAA Division III championship.

Women’s Soccer won the 2021 SCIAC Tournament in November 2021. This spring, three women’s teams brought home SCIAC Tournament Championships: Golf, Lacrosse, and Swim & Dive. Women’s Tennis also won the regular season championship after finishing the season undefeated in SCIAC play.

Along with team triumphs came individual feats. Pitzer’s Namlhun Jachung ’24 earned MVP as the Women’s Water Polo team won the US Water Polo Division III National Championship. Pitzer’s Sydney Landauer ’25 led the charge during the Lacrosse team’s 15-11 win over the CMS Athenas in the SCIAC Championship game. Kush Patel ’24 was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Rookie of the Year in his first season on the team.

In addition to recent athletic achievements and milestones, Pomona-Pitzer Athletics is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Title IX, commemorating the landmark federal law that prohibits gender discrimination in educational programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. Visit the Sagehens Title IX Anniversary webpage for more information, and mark your calendars for the Pomona-Pitzer Title IX 50th Anniversary Celebration Reception and Banquet on October 15, 2022.
