Groundbreaking ceremony for The Nucleus science building

A Bridge to Scientific Discovery

On May 13, 2022, Pitzer College and Scripps College officially broke ground on an ambitious new science center and building expansion project slated to open fall 2024.

The multimillion-dollar joint initiative will create a state-of-the-art, 65,000-square-foot building—dubbed The Nucleus—next to the existing science structure. The Nucleus will feature additional teaching laboratories, classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, community courtyards and plazas, an art installation, and a greenhouse.

Pitzer Trustee Jonathan Graham ’82 and his wife, Elizabeth Ulmer, recently made a substantial donation to support Pitzer and Scripps College’s joint initiative to invigorate, expand, and reimagine the science program for the two campuses.

The Nucleus and the existing science building will be connected by a bridge to serve as a symbol of the bond between past and future scientific discovery.
