Program Title: Pitzer Exchange with Middle East Technical University (METU)

Students must be in good standing at Pitzer College and have 2.0 minimum GPA on a 4.0 scale. Preference is given to juniors and first semester seniors but sophomores are eligible if space is available.

Preparation
At least one course with content on the Middle East in history, politics, literature, religious studies, or international relations is required. General preparation is also recommended: Language, Culture and Society; Intercultural Communications; Introduction to International/ Intercultural Studies; Introduction to Sociocultural Anthropology

Application
Students must first apply through Pitzer’s Office of Study Abroad and International Programs. If accepted by Pitzer, students will then be asked to complete the METU application.

Program Dates
Fall semester: Mid-August to late December
Spring semester: Early January to mid-June

Required Courses
Students are required to take a full course load at METU. Intensive Language Course Participants are expected to take one course that includes content on Turkish history, politics, literature or culture. In addition, participants take the Pitzer course MLLC110 Intercultural Learning: Portfolio Writing via Sakai.

Intensive Language
Students will take a 3-4 week intensive Turkish course with Active Languages prior to the university courses and may continue language study at the university during the semester.

Course Options
The University offers broad curricular offerings with particular strengths in the natural sciences, engineering and the social sciences. Students planning to take courses to fulfill major or minor science requirements should consult a member of the Keck Science Department faculty ahead of time.

Credit Possible
Students take a pre-semester Turkish language course worth 0.75 Pitzer course credits, a full course load of 15 or 16 units at METU (typically 5 courses worth 3 units each) which is four Pitzer course credits and 0.5 credits for the writing course via Sakai for a total of 5.25 Pitzer course credits for the semester.

Housing and Board Options
Students live with and take meals with host families during the language course. Students then move into a shared room in a METU residence hall and eat in the campus cafeteria or at the campus restaurant.

Advising Notes
Students have the option of continuing their language studies through Turkish courses available at METU.
