International Exchanges – Hong Kong

Open to Pitzer students only. Program options subject to change.

Program Title: Pitzer Exchange with Lingnan University

Eligibility
Students must be in good academic standing at Pitzer. Lingnan University requires a 2.5 GPA. Preference given to juniors and first semester seniors but sophomores are eligible if space is available.

Preparation
At least one Asian area studies course in literature or film, history, or political studies is strongly recommended. Suggested additional general preparation options include: Comparative Politics; Intercultural Communications; Language Culture and Society; Introduction to International/ Intercultural Studies; Introduction to Sociocultural Anthropology; Engaging Difference.

Application
Students must first apply through Pitzer’s Office of Study Abroad and International Programs. If accepted by Pitzer, students will then be asked to complete the Lingnan University application and other required documents including academic transcript, student visa application form with supporting documents, and the visa application fee.

Program Dates
Fall program: Early to mid-August to late December
Spring program: Mid-January to late May

Required Courses
Students are required to take a Chinese language course as part of a full course load at Lingnan. In addition, students take  the Pitzer course MLLC110 Intercultural Learning: Portfolio Writing via Sakai.

Intensive Language
Students must take a Chinese language class.

Independent Study
The university does not offer support for independent study projects. If you are interested in a study abroad independent research project please talk to a Study Abroad counselor at Pitzer.

Course Options
All courses are taught in English except otherwise specified such as Chinese (CHI-coded) and Translation (TRA-coded). When Chinese is used, it will be specified in the class schedules published for each term whether it is taught in Cantonese or Mandarin. Credit Possible
Pitzer students are required to take 15-16 credits (possibly 5 courses at Lingnan) in order to earn the equivalent of 4 courses at Pitzer. Exchange students at must enroll for at least 12 credits per term to comply with Hong Kong immigration laws. In addition, Pitzer exchange students will earn 0.5 Pitzer course credits for the writing course via Sakai. (See above under Required Courses.)

Housing and Board Options
Students are required to live on campus. All the rooms are on twins-sharing basis and are generally sex-segregated on each floor. Exchange students will live in a residence hall with local students. Lingnan University does not operate any meal plan. There is a student cafeteria and a full service Chinese restaurant on campus. There are also may restaurants in the neighborhood. Students on this exchange will receive a stipend for meals from Pitzer.
