Program Title: Pitzer Exchange based at Federal University of Roraima (UFRR)

Eligibility
Students must be in good academic standing at Pitzer and have minimum 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Introductory Portuguese and Advanced Spanish are required. Intermediate Portuguese is highly recommended. Additional course on the culture/history of Brazil and/or the Amazon are recommended. A course or the equivalent on ethnographic research method is required.

Preparation
At least one Latin American area studies preferably with emphasis on Brazil and/or the Amazon region is strongly recommended before departure. Other general preparation options include: Social science research methods, Introduction to Sociocultural Anthropology, Latin America History, Race and Class, Indigenous Societies.

Application
Students must first apply through Pitzer’s Office of Study Abroad and International Programs. If accepted by Pitzer, students will then be asked to complete the Roraima application.

Note: The academic year follows the Southern Hemisphere calendar – from March to December.

Required Courses
Language course (or another regular class if proficient in the language) (1 credit); Culture/History of the Amazon or Brazil (1 credit); Independent Study Project (2 credits); and the Pitzer course MLLC110 Intercultural Learning: Portfolio Writing via Sakai.

Intensive Language Study
UFRR will offer an intensive Portuguese course. Students with advanced Portuguese will enroll in regular classes. Students with introductory or intermediate Portuguese will have special classes and tutoring.

Other Course Options
The university offers excellent courses in the following topics: Amazonian cultures, tropical ecology, Latin America history, indigenous societies, race and ethnicity in the region, and migration, among others. The following disciplines are particularly recommended: anthropology, sociology, history, ecology, political science, ethnic studies (UFRR has a strong Indigenous Program). Research opportunities are available in anthropology, sociology, indigenous societies, history and environmental studies.

Credit Possible
Four courses per semester are the normal load to equal four course credits at Pitzer. Students must maintain a minimum enrollment of four courses to retain student status. In addition, students will earn 0.5 Pitzer course credits for the writing course via Sakai. (See above under Required Courses.)

Housing and Board Options
Students are placed in home stays with Brazilian families. A stipend is provided for meals.

Additional Notes
UFRR exchanges have an early deadline. Students applying for participation must submit the completed application forms prior to leaving for winter break. Consult an adviser for details. The chance of placement for is very limited.
