The Pitzer College Student Senate makes formal collective actions through legislation. There are two types of legislation: resolutions and bills. Constitutional amendments are a subcategory of bills with some special rules.

Resolutions are position statements on issues that the Student Senate does not have direct Jurisdiction over. For instance, a resolution might urge the college administration to change a policy, or it might take a stand on an issue in the community.

Bills detail how Student Senate will enact a policy, and apply to areas where Senate has jurisdiction. Bills can allocate funds, amend the bylaws of Senate, or take any other formal action. Amendments to the Student Senate Constitution are similar to bills, but must be approved by the student body through a referendum.

All legislation must be approved by a majority of the Legislature, except for constitutional amendments, which require a two-thirds vote. Any member of Student Senate can introduce a resolution or bill. To find out more about this process, see the page on proposing legislation


Recent Legislation

According to Student Senate nomenclature, resolutions are denoted by “R,” bills are denoted by “B,” and constitutional amendments are denoted by “A.” Note that prior to the 2016-2017 academic year, constitutional amendments were sometimes considered to be resolutions, while during the 2016-2017 academic year they were considered bills.
