West, East, and Skandera Halls

The WES Hall Community – Sophomore, Junior and Senior Suite Living

Opened in fall 2012, West, East, and Skandera Halls are the newest residential living areas on Pitzer’s campus. WES halls are made up of four buildings that house 300 sophomores, juniors and seniors in suite-style living. Living in WES Halls is an incredible living experience; set on the northwest part of campus, it boasts not only beautiful facilities but an unobstructed view of the San Gabriel mountain range.

There are eight Resident Assistants (RAs) that live in WES Hall who are excited to share their experiences with WES. residents at Pitzer. The RAs facilitate community building in the residence hall through program planning, as well as security checks throughout the building every night of the week.

  • There is one Faculty in Residence (FIR) and one visiting faculty member who also live in apartments in WES Hall. The FIR is active in the Pitzer community and often hosts programs for residents in their apartment in the residence hall.
  • There is one Residence Director (RD) who is a full-time professional staff member who lives year-round in Atherton Hall. They are responsible for supervising student staff, overseeing hall programming, managing facilities, and promoting respectful conduct.

WES Hall has 67 suites that have two double-occupancy rooms with a shared bathroom. In addition, there are also ten suites that have four single rooms with a shared bathroom and common room. (Only juniors, seniors, and those with single room accommodations, are eligible to live in single rooms.)

WES Hall Resources

West and East Halls offer a wide variety of resources to residents. In most cases, these resources are conveniently located in the complex and students have access to many of them 24 hours a day.

  • Study Rooms and Nooks – There are 14 different study rooms and three study nooks located throughout West and East Halls. These rooms and study nooks provide private, quiet, study spaces where individuals or groups can work on classwork. Three study rooms provide access to a printer and a computer that is available for the community to use.
  • Student Identity Group Spaces – MIX (Mixed Identity Exchange) and MESA (Middle Eastern Student Association) both have designated student group spaces in West Hall on the top floor.
  • Living Room – There is one living room located on the second floor of West Hall. This living room can serve as a social gathering space for the community. The living room has couches, tables and chairs, vending machines, a TV and DVD player, and a bathroom.
  • Demonstration Kitchen – The Demonstration kitchen is used by students, staff and faculty on campus for a wide variety of cooking projects and events. The kitchen has a refrigerator, oven, stovetop, dishwasher, sink, and a long seating and work-station. The demonstration kitchen is also equipped with a television for presentations and vending machines. Some cooking supplies for the kitchen are available for checkout from the WES Hall Service Desk.
  • Laundry Rooms – Located on the first floors of West and East Halls, the laundry rooms are a community space that allows WES Hall residents to wash and dry their clothes conveniently. Laundry costs $1.00 to wash and $0.75 to dry and can be paid for with Claremont Cash on a Pitzer student ID card or with quarters.
  • Founding Faculty AmphitheaterLocated in an outdoor space tucked between WES and PAS Halls, the amphitheater is dedicated to Pitzer’s founding faculty. This is a great meeting space to have outdoor events like open mic night, a bonfire, or club event.
  • Academic Space – In addition to the residential space, the first floor of West Hall is home to the Mosbacher/Gartrell Center for Media Experimentation and Activism, the Office of Study Abroad and International Programs, the Pitzer Archive and Conference Center, and the Kallick Family Gallery. There are also seminar rooms, study rooms, computer and digital photography labs, and ten media studies editing suites.
