Asst. Vice-President &
Dean of Students
Happy New Year! Congratulations on completing the Fall semester, and best wishes for a successful Spring term! You, and your success, matter. Please join us in welcoming our new transfer and exchange students. In this newsletter you will find news and updates as we begin the new semester, as well as opportunities coming to the Claremont Colleges. This new newsletter will also feature Connie’s Corner which provides you with academic tips and advice from Pitzer’s Academic Coach Connie Helland!
Last night approximately 100 community members were able to unite together with the Latinx Student Union, IndigeNations Claremont Scholars, Student Senate and the First Year Class to honor first year student Netzali Can. It was a beautiful reminder of just how much every member of our community matters, is valued, and the strength and support we form together in community. Together, we are Pitzer.
Your First Year Class Council is putting together the collection of notes and memories gathered last night and they will be delivered to the family on our behalf. Students needing additional support during normal business hours can contact the Office of Student Affairs at 909-621-8241 to be connected with resources. For after-hours support, you can reach our 24/7 on-call team by calling Campus Safety at 909-607-2000. Chicano Latino Student Affairs (drop in hours on Thursdays from 3PM-4PM with therapist Dr. Dana Reyes) and the Office of the Chaplains are also resources you can access.

Academic Coach
Welcome to the semester that you are finally going to get organized right from the start! I’m the academic coach and I have lots of ways to help you get started on the right foot. One of the simplest ways to stay on top of your assignments is to use the Semester Planning Calendar that Student Affairs puts out for FREE!
Instead of putting your syllabi into your notebook, never to be read, write down all of your assignments on the calendar and hang it on your wall. Calendars are available in the Academic Coaching office in 112 Atherton Hall and 104 Scott Hall. If you would like to schedule a one-on-one coaching appointment, you can contact me at [email protected].

Transform: Revolutionizing Worship
The Claremont Colleges’ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Keynote Event
Sunday, January 26th | 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (Brunch & talkback to follow.)
Scripps College Garrison Theater
FREE TICKET REQUIRED FOR ENTRY | Click here for more information/ticketing.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Committee and OBSA invite The Claremont Colleges community to join us for an exciting celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. This year the celebration jointly acknowledges Dr. King’s life and work, and the 50th anniversary of the Office of Black Student Affairs. The Beyoncé Mass is a Christian worship service that uses the music and personal life of Beyoncé as a tool to foster an empowering conversation about Black women—their lives, their bodies, and their voices. Based on the scholarship of Rev. Yolanda Norton, the H. Eugene Farlough Chair of Black Church Studies at San Francisco Theological Seminary, this groundbreaking spiritual experience gathered over 1000 people at its inaugural event in San Francisco. This service does not worship or deify Beyoncé. Rather, it is a way to connect multiple communities to inclusive spiritual traditions and broaden conceptions of faith and justice. For more information & ticketing, please visit the event website.
