Dear Pitzer College Community,

Following a competitive national search assisted by Lapovsky Consulting, I am pleased to announce the selection of Laura Troendle as Pitzer College Treasurer and Vice President for Finance and Administration.

In this time of dynamic economic change, the treasurer and vice president for finance and administration will serve as a critical strategic adviser to me, Pitzer’s senior leadership team, the Budget Implementation Committee (BIC) and the faculty. In this critical role, Laura will provide expert financial and budget planning, supervise HR management issues and serve as a liaison and resource to the Board of Trustees. The treasurer and vice president for finance and administration organizes, coordinates and translates campus initiatives, supporting the College community’s shared aspiration to positively impact our students and the world.

Laura brings 20 years of finance and administration experience to Pitzer College, including strategic planning and implementation, budget forecasting, endowment and gift management, financial management design, cash and debt management, staff and work restructuring and process mapping and efficiency. Most recently, she served as director of budget and finance for Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences, where she supervised the financial and administrative management of the college’s 16 academic departments and six administrative departments, managed a $300 million budget and stewarded a $75 million endowment.

Prior to her work at Syracuse University, Laura directed accounting and reporting for the international insurance company AXA. She was a division accounting manager at Cooper Industries Ltd. She also founded, obtained financing for and grew a café and catering business, which doubled sales in two years and was successfully sold after five years.

Laura holds a BA in accounting and a master’s in business administration from the State University of New York at Oswego.

I was especially pleased that we were able to make this selection during the final weeks of the spring semester when we were all busy with year-end activities. I am grateful to the Search Advisory Committee members, Chair Yvonne Berumen, Paul Faulstich, Linus Yamane, Dan Hirsch, and student member, Matthew Omori ’18, who reviewed candidates and selected the campus finalists. Several committees interviewed finalists on campus: members from the FEC, the BIC, the Diversity Committee; representatives from the leadership and staff of the Treasurer’s Office, Human Resources and Facilities; and the Cabinet. I also want to thank the VPs of finance and administration for CMC (Robin Aspinall) and Scripps (Dean Calvo), our Keck Science partners, for meeting with and interviewing our finalists. Pitzer Board of Trustees Chair Harold Brown, Budget Committee Chair David Levin ’90 and Committee Member Phoebe Wood P’19 also interviewed the finalists. Thanks to all of you.

Please join me in welcoming Laura Troendle to Pitzer College. Her first day on campus will be July 23, 2018.

My sincere thanks to Yuet Lee for his nearly 10 years of dedicated service to Pitzer. Please join me in wishing him well in his future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Melvin L. Oliver
President
