Dear
Pitzer Community,
It is with deep sadness that I inform our community of the
passing of first-year Pitzer student Netzali Can ’23
of Hayward, CA. Netzali died over winter break while visiting family in
Guatemala as a result of an allergic reaction. We have been in touch with her
family and have shared our condolences on behalf of our college community. We
will remain in contact to provide whatever support we can provide to them.
Please keep Netzali’s family in your
thoughts during this difficult time.
Before coming to Pitzer, Netzali had been a hospital
research intern and was very committed to the sciences. She was captain of her
Cross-Country team and captain of both her high school and club soccer team.
She was also president of the Environmental Club at her school. During her
semester at Pitzer, she had become active in Latinx Student Union, was involved
with Indige-Nation Claremont Scholars and provided mentorship and support for
Native youth in Los Angeles. She was also a student employee at the Grove
House. She was an exceptional person and will be missed greatly.
In this challenging time, students in need of emergency or
urgent counseling assistance are encouraged to contact Monsour Counseling and
Psychological Services after-hours through Campus Safety by calling 909-607-2000 or during regular business
hours by calling 909-621-8202 or stopping by Tranquada
Student Services, 1st Floor. Student Affairs also offers walk-in hours daily from
1:30 – 3:30 PM, Monday-Friday. Chaplains are available by calling
the Chaplains Office during regular business hours at (909) 621-8685 or visiting the McAlister
