Dear Pitzer Community:

Peaceful and orderly transitions of power and authority are hallmarks of a functioning democracy. Despite our many problems, the United States has been remarkably successful in this regard. To this point, the spirit of cooperation and the absence of spite during these transitions have been a point of pride for all of us. Regardless of our differences, we have respected this tradition time and again. Yesterday’s events are a painful and regrettable stain on our history, and a reminder of the fragility of our democracy and indeed, our future.

As members of the Pitzer Community we condemn the bullying, intimidation, prejudice, and violence that we witnessed yesterday. We are united by our core values that are tied to truth and learning, and based on a commitment to civil, respectful discourse and ethical action. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we live these values as we reflect on recent events in this country and the impact they have had on our society here and around the world.

In these days, and every day, we should proclaim the Pitzer motto – provida futuri – and be mindful of the future in our actions and words. The future is in our own hands and with that comes exceptional responsibility. In this regard, I continue to be lifted up by the work being carried out by members of the Pitzer community locally and globally. Thank you all for giving me a reason for optimism.

Please continue to care for yourselves and each other. Students in need of support and resources are encouraged to access them as described in the statement issued earlier today (PDF attached) from the Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services of The Claremont Colleges.

Provida Futuri,

Melvin L. Oliver President
