Dear Faculty and Staff,

I hope you had a restful Wellness Day and a peaceful Memorial Day holiday.

Over the long weekend, I sent a letter to our Dining staff colleagues that I want to share with all of you now.  It reiterates Pitzer’s support for them, including our full support of their right to vote on whether or not to unionize. It clarifies some additional rights they have in that process, and it offers some basic information about voting.

The letter follows, for your information and awareness.

Dear Dining Staff:

With the start of the summer, I realize many of you will be away from campus for a while. I want to thank you for another year of outstanding service to our community and wish you a happy and healthy summer.

I also want to say that Pitzer College welcomes the current staff discussions on the topic of unionizing. Our core values guide us in protecting and advocating for staff rights; supporting staff in learning about the choices before them; and ensuring they are able to make those choices for themselves.

Pitzer is also committed to continuing our efforts to be the very best workplace possible for you and all staff. Again guided by our core values, we have demonstrated that commitment recently in many ways of which I am proud. We committed to retaining all staff at full pay throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. We restored the College’s contribution to staff retirement accounts to the full, pre-pandemic level and repaid all contributions that were paused. We made mid-year salary adjustments to address inflation and are planning additional adjustments for July 1, 2022 (our typical schedule for such adjustments). And we have voiced and will continue to voice our support for your right to vote on whether or not to be represented by a union.

Here are some facts to know about on-campus discussions related to unionizing, the process in general, and your rights:

  • Whether you support or do not support unionization is entirely up to you.
  • Everyone is free to express their opinion, and no one may be forced into taking an action they do not want to take.
  • Discussion of these issues must take place in non-working spaces during non-working time. Conversations before or after work or during breaks (non-working time) are allowed
  • Discussions may not interfere with anyone’s ability to perform their work, nor should anyone feel harassed, threatened, intimidated, coerced, or otherwise feel as if they do not have a choice in the matter.
  • If you are asked to sign a Union Authorization Card, doing so is entirely your decision. Unions often use a signed card as evidence of support for unionizing provided by the signer. If you sign because you feel pressured to do so (or if you simply change your mind), you have the right to cancel the card by emailing that request to the union.
  • If a unionization vote is scheduled, it is very important to participate in that vote. If a majority of voters vote “yes,” all participants, regardless of how they voted, will be required by the vote to unionize. If a majority vote “no,” all voters will be required by the vote not to unionize. Either way, we encourage you to vote either “yes” or “no.”

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your departmental supervisor or Human Resources. If you would like to speak with someone outside of those departments, Jim Marchant has agreed to be a resource. Jim is a longtime member of the Pitzer community who some of you know. He can be reached at [email protected]
